The Zachary High powerlifting team, under Jason Davis, competed in the East regional and State powerlifting tournament and provided some impressive performances.

At the East Regional, Gabby Anthony and Megan Roussell won their weight classes and Nilah Duhe came in second place. Anthony broke the regional squat record with an amazing squat of 450 (the previous record was 405) and broke the total record for the three lifts with a total of 1055 (the previous record was 985). She was also named the Women’s Most Outstanding Lifter.

At the state meet, Anthony won the state championship and Duhe finished fourth going nine for nine on her lifts and setting three personal records. Yes, that is Anthony’s second state championship this year (wrestling in February). More on this incredible athlete to come.

Davis commented that “Gabby winning a state championship and Nilah’s efforts were amazing and I am so happy for them.” He further noted that “the hard work and dedication they showed will not be forgotten and we were so lucky to have them (seniors Anthony and Duhe) in the program.” Davis then challenged next year’s returners. “Now it’s up to Megan and others to continue to build on that” Davis said.

In fall sports news, ZHS punter Christian Cosey has officially committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Southern University.

Annual ZAF Golf Tournament was a big hit. On April 6, the Zachary Athletic Foundation held its annual golf tournament at Copper Mill Golf Course.

Twenty-four four-man teams competed in the scramble during a beautiful sunny spring day.

Coaches from all of the Zachary High athletic programs were there to play and support the golfers with po-boys and drinks throughout the course. The golfers were also treated to a pastalaya dinner courtesy of the foundation.

The Zachary Orthodontics Team of Darren Hess, Alex Milazzo, Gene Stevens and Jacob Holoway had the low score and were the winners. They were followed by the City of Zachary team consisting of Mayor David McDavid, Ty Stephens, Kaplan Martin and Brady Bennett. The third-place team included Donnie Chatelain, Brandt Garon, Stan Watts and Mike Lejeune.

Team Brady consisting of Gordon “P-Wee” Leblanc, Reed Felder, Will Felder and Bryce Morris claim they were the “closest to the pin” but independent confirmation has not been obtained at the time of writing. Foundation board members were quick to thank all of the sponsors and participants for an outstanding event.
