Wilmington, N.C., Sept. 19, 2025— The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has given the all-clear after nearly three tense hours of lockdown prompted by reports of a possible armed individual on campus. Authorities later confirmed the reports were unfounded, and no active threat was present.
The incident began Friday evening when emergency alerts urged students, faculty, and staff to shelter in place. Law enforcement quickly mobilized, sweeping multiple campus buildings and surrounding areas.
“All-clear. UNCW Police have determined there is no active attacker on campus at this time,” the university announced in a late-night alert. “Police have thoroughly investigated the initial reports, and everyone is safe.”
Students remained in dorms and classrooms, while faculty and staff followed lockdown protocols. Many described the atmosphere as tense but orderly.
“We appreciate the vigilance of those who reported their concerns and understand the fear this type of incident causes,” UNCW officials said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our students, employees, and visitors is always our top priority.”
Authorities emphasized that while the initial reports proved to be a false alarm, the response demonstrated the importance of readiness and rapid communication in potential emergency situations.
As campus life returns to normal, officials say they will continue reviewing safety protocols to ensure the university remains prepared for any future emergencies.
