Democrats have made public a letter signed by former President Donald Trump, extending birthday wishes to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The release has reignited political debate about Trump’s past relationship with Epstein, despite the former president’s repeated claims of limited contact.
Epstein, who faced charges of sex trafficking before his death in 2019, was described by Trump in 2016 as “an acquaintance.” At the time, Trump said, “I knew him, like everybody in Palm Beach knew him.”
Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff commented: “This letter speaks volumes about the real nature of their relationship. It directly undermines Trump’s assertion of having no personal connection.”
The letter, handwritten and signed by Trump, reportedly reads in part: “Happy Birthday — you deserve it!” Democrats argue that the personal tone contradicts Trump’s earlier denials of any meaningful association with Epstein.
Trump, responding through a spokesperson, downplayed the letter’s significance.
“It’s just a birthday greeting. He got a lot of those. It doesn’t change the fact that I had nothing to do with the terrible acts he was accused of,” Trump said in a statement.
While the discovery has amplified political arguments, there is no evidence to suggest Trump had involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities. Experts note that the letter, while politically damaging, does not alter the legal landscape.
The renewed attention highlights how Epstein’s connections to powerful figures continue to reverberate in American politics. With Democrats using the letter to question Trump’s credibility and Republicans dismissing it as political theater, the issue is expected to remain a flashpoint in the months ahead.
