CHICAGO, April 24, 2024 — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of an undocumented man from Guatemala in Chicago, linking him to a deadly DUI crash that occurred late last month.
Authorities stated the man allegedly crashed his vehicle while under the influence, resulting in the death of a local resident. The arrest was made as part of ICE’s broader mission to prioritize public safety while collaborating with local law enforcement.
“Our hearts go out to the family of the victim who lost their life in this tragic incident,” said Robert D. Guadian, ICE Chicago Field Office Director. “ICE is committed to ensuring that individuals who pose a threat to our communities are held accountable.”
While the man now faces local DUI charges, ICE has confirmed he will remain in federal custody pending both criminal proceedings and immigration hearings. Officials emphasized that the legal process will determine the next steps in his case.
Community leaders have expressed concerns about both road safety and the broader implications for immigrant communities in Chicago. Advocacy groups noted that while accountability is essential, ensuring due process and transparency will be critical moving forward.
The case remains under investigation, with court proceedings expected to unfold in the coming weeks.
