A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for April 10-11, 2026

BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in Bay County for April 10-11, 2026. Bay County coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each game by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com.

The wealth of Bay City Western’s talent goes more than one team deep.

So when Western was making a run for the Pinconning Invitational title, it wasn’t surprised that one of its top challengers was Western 2.

Not only did Western bring home the team title from the 13-team tournament at Maple Leaf, it also scored a fourth-place showing with Western 2, providing an early season glimpse of the abundance of ability in the program.

Rowan Smithgall led the charge for Western 1, tying for medalist honors with a 71 before losing to Freeland’s Tristan Pohl in a playoff.

Western 2 (328) also featured a pair of Top 10 finishers in third-place Cole Goik (74) and ninth-place Gradyn O’Keefe (79). Western 2 also featured Lukas Arnold (85) and Broox Knochel (90).

Garber (316) was led by fourth-place Lucas Schiefer (75), ninth-place Devin Dueweke (79), Nicholas Zeilinger (81) and Cass Walraven (81).

Host Pinconning (397) took 12th place with Karsyn Smith (89), Owen O’Laughlin (91), Max Meehleder (100) and Remington Merithew (117).

LACROSSE: CENTRAL SCORES SVL VICTORY

Bay City Central captured its first Saginaw Valley League win of the season, outdueling Davison 11-6.

With another solid game in net from Joe Britton, it marked the third time in four games that the Wolves held their opponent to six goals or less.

“Our defense is still a work in progress,” Central coach Eric Anderson said. “But after four games, they are consistently improving.”

Central got three-goal performances from Max Miller and Ethan Hubbard in the win. Kaiden DuRussel and Byron Wilson added two goals apiece while Noah MacDonald came through with the first goal of his career.

Saginaw Swan Valley found an edge and pounced on it, pulling away from Standish-Sterling for an 8-3 non-conference win.

“Swan Valley took advantage of our weakness and we couldn’t overcome it,” Standish coach Kacey Bentley said. “We’ll tweak a few issues that Swan Valley exploited and we’ll be back on track.”

Standish got goals from Addison Schaenzer, Charlotte Ming and Analeis Ming. Klaire Kuberski and Breigan Bartlett notched one assist apiece.

TENNIS: KLAWON CLAIMS CROWN FOR BCC

Bay City Central placed fourth at the St. Johns Tournament, but Lauren Klawon was second to none.

The senior gave the Wolves a grand early season highlight, winning the No. 1 singles title at the event. Klawon went 3-0 on the day, standing tall for a pair of three-set victories.

No. 3 Aleeya Lorenz and No. 4 Lauren Bontekoe also landed singles wins for Central while No. 2 Abby Schubert and Lauren Boon notched a doubles victory.

SOFTBALL: FIRST WIN IS WALKOFF FOR STANDISH

Standish-Sterling landed its first win of the season, and it was a barnburner.

After a 4-2 loss to North Branch in the season opener, the Panthers rebounded with a 9-8 win in nine-inning thriller.

North Branch scored two in the top of the eighth only to see Standish counter, sending the game into the ninth knotted at 8-8. The Panthers got it done as Chloe Markel bunted tiebreaker runner Tyla Tunney to third and Keeley Peace brought her home with a walkoff RBI single.

Peace had three hits and three RBIs in the win, including a triple and a home run. Anna Briggs added two hits and Jaylynn Yenna tallied two RBIs.

Peace, Yenna and Julia Mattson each knocked two hits in the opener for the Panthers. Madison Burke struck out seven in a complete-game effort in Game 1 and got the win in relief in Game 2.
